IT CAME TO PASS, on what was doubtless a dark and stormy night, that a country girl and a handful of animals all sought shelter in the same rustic farmhouse. They passed the hours eating what they could find, and, of course, telling tales. At first, they all chirped and chattered at the same time, and no one could be understood at all (the Fox didn't help matters by mumbling with his mouth full of apple, and it was hard for everyone not to interrupt the Tortoise). But eventually they settled down, took turns speaking, and by the time the sun came out, all of their individual stories had been told. And as is so often the case, they had learned something as well...
